9/12/2023 0 Comments Beyond vango![]() ![]() Upon entering we walked through a couple of very dark empty rooms until we reached the first of two rooms where the immersion experience takes place. Masks were worn by everyone and sanitizer was available. We didn’t have cash so decided to park right on the street nearby. The place is easy to find and valet parking is available at the site, self parking is located one street over. I had purchased tickets online about 10 days earlier, on the day of my visit all timeslots were sold, so buy tickets ahead of time. Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists so I was thrilled when the exhibition with immersion experience was advertised. I did not find it transformative or anything other than a traveling show of art work that was at a lesser quality than I have found on the walls of a third rate hotel lobby. It was in the end a movie of pictures of his art projected on a few walls with a soundtrack. It was not a study of his life and/or his art, it was not a traveling exhibit of his actual work. This left me kind of wondering what exactly this exhibit was trying to be. This is a 35 minute experience of Van Gogh's work projected on the walls and floors (slightly blurry) with music and some slight animations added. The first room has a number of different lit panels with facts about Van Gogh's life, and the second room is about the size of the tennis court with projections of his art on all four walls and on a few pillars in the middle of the room. In short this is a two room traveling exhibit. I was really excited to see this exhibit, having moved from a major city with amazing art exhibits coming to town every few weeks, I was really hopeful that this would make for an interesting date night with my wife. You will be disappointed when you realize how easy it is to dupe people to turn over their hard earned cash for for a 13 minutes show. By the time the valet parked the car and returned to her station the entire show was over and she had to go back for the car.Īs an art lover, I felt betrayed by what was provided for what we paid. The entire show ended in thirteen minutes for me. I thought I was seeing incorrectly, but when peeked around the corner it was actually outside. I took a look to my right and there was the exit sign. Shortly after, there were several portraits of Van Gogh, and absolutely nothing else. Then we entered a room with swirling colors almost like a disco. Walking slowly and reading about the fascinating life of Van Gogh, was rather pleasant. There were large paintings with either a projection or a poster over each one. Valet is $20 and parking garage is $15.Ībout 9:55 am we were ushered inside to get a look into the life and art of Vincent Van Gogh. We decided to valet park instead of parking on the street or using the parking garage. Obviously, I cannot speak for the shows in other cities, but I strongly recommend the show Beyond Van Gogh in Charleston, SC. You are surrounded by, and included in, the components of his art. ![]() See the windmills slowly turn and the eyes blink. The show lasts about an hour and 15 minutes, but to really enjoy it, you may wish to stay and see it a second time (no one rushes you) as you see the floral petals blow off of the trees and land at, and upon, your feet. Through synchronized multimedia magic, Van Gogh's art is freed from their frame(s) and projected onto walls, partitions, floors, people. The children are mentioned in my review because it is a delight to see them interacting with the art images - they are mesmerized by the images and dancing to the music. Add in a number of small children in attendance and it is a charming event. It is a combination of history, projected images, plus music, plus video/graphic art. I attended Beyond Van Gogh in Charleston SC, but can find no such listing for the Charleston location in Trip Advisor, so my apology for this mishmash review.īottom line, I loved it and want to encourage others to see it. This is a difficult review because there are apparently competing and conflicting traveling Van Gogh exhibits - one called Immersive Experience and another titled Beyond Van Gogh, which is the one I attended. ![]()
